The World has lived about 18 months with the COVID-19. We learned to live with some constant worry. We learned to live in a lockdown. We learned to study and work from home. We stopped going to concerts. We also changed a lot.
One of the things, which changed most, is our eating habits.
1. We changed the place where we eat
Eating at home rose by 63% year to year. Initially lock-downs naturally brought about a sharp spike in eating at home – we were forbidden to leave home in some cases, eateries were closed or limited in others. Post lockdown many of us restricted ourselves from eating out – we were just being cautious. Today it is a fact of life. Across the world eating at home strongly increased.
2. Healthy meals have a new meaning
Eating healthy has always been a hot topic. The preference of the CORONA infection to become complicated for individuals suffering from obesity, high cholesterol, and diabetes gave healthy eating a whole new name. Eating healthy is no longer about looking good, it is about staying alive!
3. Home cooking is big
Adding the above two trends will obviously land us with an increase in home cooking. We started to consider what goes into food – it is no longer enough to have great taste and a good look. With time on our hands, and a kitchen in the next room, and … yes… closed restaurants, many of us started to become really good at preparing our own food.
4. Vitamin hunt
Prior to the pandemic few of us were aware of how many vitamins are out there (besides the vitamin C in lemons, of course) and what use were they. Then we learned that vitamins are important for the immune system, which in turn protected us against infection. Now 18 months later, many of us are experts in vitamin intake and nutrient requirements.
5. Food and grocery delivery skyrocketed
If we are to cook at home, but cannot leave our apartment we will ask for grocery delivery. If we cannot cook, but want something to eat we will ask for food delivery.
If we want to eat healthily, but prefer someone else to prepare our wonder food we will ask for food delivery.
Food delivery skyrocketed. Start-up companies are popping up everywhere. Revenue from food delivery increased 3 times just in 2020.
6. Ask the web
Prior to the pandemic, people seldom used their web devices for food-related topics – maybe a recipe for Thanksgiving, and that would be it for the year. Today we are asking, … no, we need the web for everything – checking nutrients, monitoring intake, recipes for healthy meals, traditional and gourmet suggestions. Probably this will be the only time in history when a virus did something good for the internet.
